About Senses of Spain

Hola! I’m Amy Macpherson, a New Zealander obsessed with Spain. I’ve been sharing short-form videos about Spain travel, food, culture, heritage, and nature on Instagram and TikTok for a few years now.

I started this new space on SubStack because a lot of what I want to share doesn’t fit into the few seconds (or even minutes) of a social media video. Since launching it earlier in 2024, I put the project on hold for a while to rethink my web presence, and now I’ve decided to reorder things a bit.

I’m in the process of launching a new website, sensesofspain.com, which will be my online “base camp”. I’ll be using this newsletter to send links to new blog posts on the website, plus some newsletter-only content: a round-up of recent Spain travel news, tips for planning your future travel, and any interesting Spain-related books or articles I’ve been reading. Once I get underway again, you can expect 2-4 newsletters per month.

Some more about me

After a few years focused on video, I’m excited to get back into travel writing. Waaay back when I was a baby journalist, I worked for a backpacker magazine in London and often found myself travelling the world for stories.

After that I moved into the world of museums, spending 12 years making digital content for the Royal Academy of Arts (you can see some of my video work here) before a pivot into digital marketing in the Spanish technology sphere.

I moved to Spain in early 2020 (yep
right before you-know-what) and spent two years in Madrid, before moving to sunny Málaga on the Costa del Sol in early 2022.

I travel around Spain whenever I can, and I like to return to places multiple times. It’s my version of slow travel: really getting to know a place and ideally making connections with the people who live there.

More than anything I’m driven by curiosity about this fascinating country, with its complex past, colourful cultural traditions, delicious food, and beautiful landscapes. I hope you’ll come along for the ride!

I’ve always loved the chats by DM or in comments that I’ve had with followers on Instagram and TikTok. I feel very lucky to have an audience of interesting and engaged people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and I’ve learned a lot from those conversations. I hope to continue that here!
